Rule change leads to record water carryover
Northern Victorian irrigators have carried over a record amount of irrigation water from last season.
Goulburn Murray Water says more than 850,000 megalitres of water was undelivered by the end of the financial year.
The authority's Mark Bailey says the amount may have increased due to a rule change that allows irrigators to carryover all their allocation.
He says there was also a jump in allocations at the end of last season.
"A lot of the improvements that we saw in the Murray system in particular did come through late in the season when people would have already made up their mind about enterprise and determined how much water they want to use," he said.
"I think a bit of it was through that late season improvements as well as a few customers deciding not to irrigate."
